My first trip to Iraq came just months after American journalist James Foley was executed in 2014.
If you remember, this was the event that incited an uproar around the world, proving that ISIS had become a global threat. After that, I knew I had to experience firsthand what was happening in the Middle East, and what believers in Christ could do to help.
In Northern Iraq, I met with refugees who had fled for their lives from advancing militants, while relief workers told me of their greatest needs. But more than anything else, I found that the Spirit of God was at work in the midst of all this devastation.
Just ten miles from an ISIS stronghold, I met a local Chaldean pastor who faithfully ministered in the area. As an Aramaic speaker, I asked if we could record the Lord’s Prayer in the very language Jesus would have used when teaching His disciples how to pray.
Isn’t that powerful? As the greatest evil in the world reared it’s ugly teeth just a few miles away, we stood in a nearby church, peacefully praying to the one true God.
When I returned to North America, Haven listeners sent $300,000 that went directly to refugees in Northern Iraq.
Last September, I returned to the Middle East as the refugee crisis began expanding across the Mediterranean. Again, I was astounded by the listeners who responded, sending $160,000 to bring food and shelter to the millions displaced by war and terrorism.
Today, the ministry I serve is facing a steep climb to finish our fiscal year end strong. To continue sharing the great story that’s all about Jesus, Haven’s US and Canadian offices need to raise a combined $370,000 before June 30th.
Would you consider now to support Haven Ministries as we prayerfully work to spread the great story around the world, no matter where that may be?
Though the need is great, each individual gift from people like you is critical for helping us continue to share Christ’s love, not only to you, but millions around the world who desperately need to experience the great story that’s all about Jesus.
